Dromoland Castle provided a stunning setting for this year’s National Finals of ‘Play in Pink’, the golf charity that supports the National Breast Cancer Research Institute. In 2019, 130 clubs hosted their own colourful fundraising ‘Play in Pink’ days, and the bar was set very high for the 26 teams that earned their place in the National Final. A sea of pink descended on Dromoland Castle on Sunday 22nd September and this majestic course ensured that only the very best of golf would tame it. Despite a rainy start, the day brightened up and the sun shone on the magnificent Dromoland Castle reigning over the 18th green as players completed their rounds.
Given the year that is in it, it may have been fate that the top honours would go to Tipperary, with Laura Ryan (5) and Marie Slattery (15) from Thurles Golf Club claiming first place with a terrific score of 43 points. They were followed very closely by Imelda Shields (36) and Ann Callaghan (28) representing Co. Cavan Golf Club, who also has 43 points and were pipped at the post on the last 6. In the Gross category the ‘Play in Pink’ competition has attracted some of the country’s top golfers. The winners on the day representing Baltray, Co. Louth were ex-international Deirdre Smith (+3) and Emily Murray (5) carded an impressive 36 points to claim top Gross prize.
With thanks to all the Lady Captain’s who hosted their local ‘Play in Pink’ days the real winner is the charity the National Breast Cancer Research Institute which will receive the benefit of all funds raised from this inspirational event.
‘Play in Pink’ aims to play golf for fun and for good, and anyone who participated in one of the many events can testify to this. With the support of the Irish Ladies Golf Union, ‘Play in Pink’ continues to go from strength to strength over the last number of years and has raised over €800,000 since 2012 with the monies going directly to the charity.
With thanks to golfers all over Ireland, the main winner is the research programme at the Lambe Institute in NUI Galway – led by Professor Michael Kerin. Miriam Hand, National ‘Play in Pink’ co-ordinator said:
“All of this would not be possible without the generous support of sponsors and Golf Clubs nationally who help make these events more successful each year. The final day served up great golf, played in the very best of spirits. I extend my heartiest congratulations and thanks to all who competed.”
